System supervision

The OPSC ensures a uniform supervisory practice within the occupational pension system. It supervises the cantonal and regional supervisory authorities. In addition, it annually collects key figures on the financial situation of pension institutions throughout Switzerland and identifies the need for reforms for the further development of the system.

Areas of Activity of System Supervision

Supervisory authorities

Pursuant to Art. 61 OPA, the seven cantonal and regional supervisory authorities are subject to OPSC oversight. The OPSC ensures the legal compliance and consistency of their supervisory practices. To this end, it may issue directives and communications, and carry out inspections.

Survey on the financial situation of pension institutions

The OPSC conducts an annual survey on the financial situation of pension institutions, based on a questionnaire sent to Swiss pension institutions. The results are published each year in May in the report on the financial situation of pension institutions.

Direct supervision

Investment foundations, the LBO Guarantee Fund Foundation and the Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution are subject to direct OPSC supervision. A core element of OPSC supervisory activities is verifying compliance of these institutions with legal requirements.
